Starting from the matryoshka doll, which generously makes its extremely metaphorical nature available to an idea, the project aims to investigate the maternal figure. The two dolls at the ends, the larger and the smaller, are called mother and seed respectively. To construct a matryoshka doll, we start with the latter, making us reflect on the natural mechanism through which it is the mother who is born from the child, indissolubly changing its identity at the
moment of birth. De André in ‘Princesa’ wrote: ‘That the horizon before the sky was the
my mother’s gaze” The matryoshka is put into a new perspective.
The seed, suffocated in the centre of the doll, looking up can only see other copies of itself with gradually increasing dimensions, followed only by the inside of a wooden container, beyond which it is impossible to push the gaze. The heart of the matryoshka is thus a nest (from ‘nesting doll’ in
English) and at the same time a dark and suffocating place.
