Scylla, the great mythological monster living in a Calabrian cave narrated by Homer
in the Odyssey, is a simple story that like any legend enters into our
imagination without full awareness of the ground in which it takes root. The beautiful
woman, transformed into a horrible monster completes her true transformation the moment
when guilelessly she looks into the mirror of water. This is how shame operates, in a
cave, in the dark. How does one weigh the pain of Scylla feeling monster with the danger of the
monster coming out of the cave? A social feeling that always has a double within it
is told through the contemporary transposition of an old myth. Then again, the
legends never die.
